New York: Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith. Very Good in Good dj. 1930. First American Edition. Hardcover Second Printing. [spine turned, bumping and slight cracking at several corners (slight exposure of boards at top and bottom corners of front cover), wear/fading to cloth at ends of spine, spine lettering partially rubbed away; jacket moderately soiled, shallow chipping at both ends of spine, tiny tears at a couple of corners]. Second printing (one month after the first) of the first American edition of Waugh's second novel, a scathing satire of England's so-called "bright young things" and their dissolute ways. Basis for the 2003 film BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS, written and directed by Stephen Fry. Fun fact: the Diana of "Bryan and Diana Guinness," to whom the book is dedicated, was the third of the six Mitford sisters. A bright (and beautiful) young thing, indeed, at the time of the novel's publication she was a glamorous society hostess -- but before the decade was out she had become a virtual pariah in her own country, having by then divorced Bryan Guinness and married Oswald Mosley, head of the British Union of Fascists; as a result of the couple's having been pretty cozy with the Nazis (I mean, they were married at Joseph Goebbels's home in Berlin, fer gawsh sakes, with Adolf Hitler among the guests), they spent most of World War II in prison. (Later printings of the novel change the dedication to read "Bryan Moyne and Diana Mosley.") The very uncommon dust jacket (different in design from the original English edition) has a "Second printing" slug at the bottom of the front flap, but in all other respects seems to be identical to the first printing of the American jacket. .
