San Fairy Ann (Ça ne fait rien): A Love Story of the Great War
by Kimber, Hugh
New York: J.H. Sears & Company. Fine in Near Fine dj. 1927. 2nd printing. Hardcover. NOISBN . [beautiful book, virtually as new, small vintage price sticker (The White House) on rear pastedown; jacket also appears practically brand-new, with a couple of infinitesimal nicks at top of front panel, short closed tear and associated crease at bottom of rear panel]. "It matters not" ("Ça ne fait rien") is the fatalistic philosophy that shadows the "tragedy, drama and romance" experienced by Dick Steele, a hard-bitten Canadian railroad engineer who joins the British Army to fight in World War I. The fates keep him apart from the girl he loves, so he marries another; he survives the war, but eventually loses both her and their child; then those darn fates, working overtime, bring him back together with the first girl. A contemporary reviewer allowed as how the plot "is little better than commonplace," but still lauded the author for the "interest and vitality" of his depictions of the protagonist's wartime experiences: "Particularly in his portrayal of the things of the battlefield the author can be both vivid in his descriptions and mordant in his criticism; his hatred of war and warriors is so intense that it can hardly fail to communicate itself to the reader; he speaks with heated scorn of the stupidities of the leaders and the horrors of the trenches." .
