Lord Cobbleigh Disappears [original U.K. title: Curiouser and Curiouser]
by Snaith, J[ohn]. C[ollis].
New York/London: D. Appleton-Century Company. Very Good in Very Good+ dj. 1936. First American Edition. Hardcover. [good solid copy with minimal wear, would grade Near Fine but for some soiling and staining to the top edge of the text block; jacket shows just a touch of wear along top edge and at lower extremities, and has a couple of old internal tape-repairs along the top and bottom edges (no external bleed-through)]. Very scarce golf-themed mystery, with a "gloriously light-hearted [and] very frothy" plot centering around "the curious disappearance of a very British gentleman, Lord Cobbleigh, noble plutocrat, owner of half an English county, and one of the typical ornaments of the Netherwold Golf Club." Called in to solve the case is "the great Viennese detective, Wolfgang Amadeus Mumm." (Mumm appears to have been a one-off character, although his failure to spark a series of exploits might reasonably be attributed to the author's death in the same year this book was published.) Originally published in England under the title "Curiouser and Curiouser," the book is little-known enough that the great mystery fiction bibliographer Allen J. Hubin misspelled the American title (with just one "b" in the Lord's name), and nobody ever bothered to correct him. . (Inventory #: 22957)
