The first third of the book is about Turkey, followed by sections on Egypt and Thebes, the West Indies, Japan, Malaya, South America and Arabia. Palgrave was the son of Sir Francis Palgrave and wrote well regarded accounts of Arabia, Syria, and the Middle East. A romantic portrait of him is by Julia Margaret Cameron. Like Richard Burton he liked to adopt a native disguise and he travelled widely poising as a Syrian physician. (Inventory #: 110646)
