Two volumes bound as one. xx, 471pp., 404pp. [2pp.] Translated by Henry Reeves, Esq. with an original preface and notes by John C. Spencer. Color frontispiece of George Washington with tissue guard. Decorative blind-stamped green cloth, gilt-stamped spine title. Three important owner's names penned on the half-title, Frances E. Bagley who was the wife of John Judson Bagley the 16th Governor of Michigan, L.S. Newbury (relative to Frances E. Bagley), and American poet laureate Dan G. Hoffman. Another Bagley relative being G. Dorothy F. Brown penciled on the title page verso. Daniel Hoffman's pen and pencil underlining and marginalia on some pages, gutter cracked before half-title page, one inch tear on top edges of frontispiece and title pages, minimal foxing on endpapers, boards with some bleached areas, spine darkened with ends frayed, still a very good copy with an interesting and distinguished provenance. A foreigner's philosophical and political view of America in the nineteenth century.
