Large 8vo. vii, 264pp; viii, 266pp. Large folding map in Volume I; two engraved map plates in Volume II; and over 300 black & white line drawings of southern and western North American Indians, their artifacts and arts. Includes plates 113-114, thought by Howes never to have been published. Although the title page claims 400 illustrations, the numbering begins with 3 in Volume 1 and stops at 312 with the last illustration in Vol. 2 opposite p. 249. Contemporary three-quarter calf with brown pebbled boards; morocco gilt-lettered spine labels; 5 raised bands to spine; marbled page edges and endpapers. Housed in brown custom slipcase with gilt lettering to spine. A very good set (bookplate of (Sir) Colin Skelton Anderson in each volume - Vol. I bookplate affixed upside down inside rear board; small news clipping announcing George Catlin's death affixed inside front board; corners lightly bumped and boards showing; wear to spine ends and some rubbing to spines; partial splitting along joints with restoration; light spotting to some pages but mostly the pages are clean). Considered by many to be one of the most important works on Native Americans published in the 19th century. This two-volume travel narrative was written during eight years of travel from 1832 to 1839 and contains many of Catlin's illustrations. The book is divided into letters written by Catlin, rather than chapters, with some letters containing information about the same regions.
