Garden City NY: Doubleday, Page & Company. Very Good. 1914. First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [good sound copy, gilt lettering on spine and front cover somewhat dulled but still readable, mild bumping to bottom corners, light wear to extremities]. The noted American naturalist's first novel, completed in 1895 but not published until twelve years after his death in 1902. In the words of a blurb from a paperback reissue, it's "both a searing study of an individual in the grip of a rare mental disease as well as a detailed social document of 19th century San Francisco. In this work the main character degenerates through debauchery until he reaches the state of literally becoming an animal. [The author] gives a terrifying picture of the results of lycanthropy, a mania in which a person imagines himself to be a wolf." (All of which makes it sound like a "werewolf novel," which it isn't, really.) The Foreword is by the author's brother, Charles G. Norris, who explains how the previously unpublished manuscript of the novel had, by a fluke, survived the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. . (Inventory #: 23840)
