February 4, Scottish explorer and philanthropist generally credited with the development of the frist sailing canoes called "Rob Roys." He is best remembered for supplying fellow Scotsman Robert Louis Stevenson with his vessel for his 1876 voyage by canoe through the canals and rivers of France and Belgium, published in 1878 as "An Island Voyage".
