REPRINT EDITION of a work which first appeared in print in 1937, now containing extensive illustrations on plates and 4 new maps. Thick 8vo. 9 1/2 x 6 1/8 inches. 575, [1] pp. title-page vignette, 68 figures in 4 16-page pictorial inserts of photos of steamboat bills of lading, woodcuts, and steel engraving not seen in the original edition, notes, index; text clean, unmarked. Gilt-stamped dark green cloth, 4 decorative maps in the end-papers; binding square and tight, light shelf wear. Laid in is a bifold "Visit the Newell Area Centennial Celebration, June 28-July 4, 1969," with a schedule of events. Very Good. This volume describes the story of steam boating from the voyage of the Virginia in 1823 to the close of the immigration period around 1870. In 1938 the original edition won the Iowa Library Association's Johnson Brigham Award for the best contribution to American Literature by an Iowan which increased the demand for the book to the extent that it became a rare volume in the market.
