New York: Macfadden Books (60-219). Very Good+. 1965 (c.1954). 1st printing thus. Softcover. [nice tight cover, light soiling to covers, minor edgewear, original price on front cover blacked out]. Mass Market PB "The strange, shocking love affair between a brawling wrestler in a third-rate carnival and the star female attraction of the carnival's freakshow" -- to wit, The Fish Girl, "beautiful but born with stumps for arms," said romance being complicated by the presence of her husband, The Fish Boy, "a gnarled, sadistic gnome who hated the world." (Well, come on, wouldn't you, especially if your wife had the hots for a wrestler?) Despite the lurid paperbackism of all that, the book was pretty well-reviewed as a picture of carny life at the time of its original hardcover publication in 1954, and is now considered a bit of a classic. "Mr. Sanders will make you sweat," said the New York Times, no less, and Variety called it "an uncorseted picture of all the shady practices on the more malodorous midways of the country." .
