Beautiful pictorial dark green wrappers with elaborate gilt design of a peacock. Engraved bookplate on inner cover. A very fine and clean copy with the original glassine dust jacket present. Housed in a custom cloth-covered slipcase with an elaborate color floral pattern. A beautiful copy, complete with the often-torn or lacking glassine jacket. Very scarce thus. A fine work devoted to precious stones and more particularly to emeralds, rubies, sapphires, engraved stones, as well as their mystery, magic, superstitions and symbolism. The orientalist illustrations by Léon Carré are magical and highlighted with gold, silver and other metallic colors. Each is bordered with an elaborate gilt design. Léon Carré was a French orientalist painter and illustrator, best known perhaps for his illustrations of The Book of One Thousand and One Nights.. (Inventory #: 8279)
