by HALFER, Josef (1846-1916).
Buffalo, NY:: Louis H. Kinder, 1893; tipped-on slip revised to: The American Bookbinder Co., 1894., 1893. 8vo. 240, pp. Illustrations with 10 plates containing 35 tipped-in color specimens. Advertisements [4 pp.] at end. Original tan boards printed in dark green and gilt to imitate a marbled pattern showing on the spine and upper cover, top edge gilt; extremities rubbed. Very good. EXTREMELY RARE. First Edition in English, of Josef Halfer’s classic Fortschritte der Marmorierkunst, Budapest, 1885 and Stuttgart, 1891. The 1885 Budapest issue “contained no original samples or marbled paper.” [Wolfe]. The 1891 issue in German was the first to contain original specimens, of which there were 35 – the English edition also matches this number of original specimens. / Richard J. Wolfe notes, relative to this 1893 issue, “Dard Hunter, in his ‘Bibliography of Marbled Paper,’ states, in citing a second, undated edition, that ‘of this edition of 1,000 copies, all but 100 were destroyed by fire, in October 1904.” I have never seen a copy of the alleged second edition.” Wolfe also wrote an “appraisal and appreciation” of the binder and publisher, Louis Herman Kinder (Bird & Bull Press, 1985). / Josef Halfer (1846-1916), was a Budapest bookbinder and marbled-paper maker. He summarized his many years of experimentation and new insights in his fundamental work, The Progress of Marble Art, 1891, which was largely responsible for the renaissance of marble art in Germany and Europe. For decades, Halfer’s marbling paints were the best in the world. / Richard J. Wolfe, Marbled Paper: Its History, Techniques, and Patterns . . .
