first edition

by Vestal, Stanley
Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 1957 First University of Oklahoma Press edition. Updated and revised from the 1932 first edition, with new material. Pp. xxi, [1], 349. 26 illustrations from photographs. Appendix, bibliographical essay, index. Orange cloth lettered in red on a black background. A very fine copy in pictorial dust jacket (the slightest of rubbing to foot of spine). One of the better biographies of this Native American soldier and statesman, who led the Sioux in the Indian Wars. Vestal considered Sitting Bull the greatest of the Plains Indians and this biography is considered the best. Much of the research was done on reservations in the Dakotas. Vestal benefitted greatly from interviews with Indians who had known Sitting Bull, including One Bull who was Sitting Bull's nephew but raised as his son.. (Inventory #: 8288)
