Berkeley: the city, 1948. Pamphlet. 22p., decorated throughout with vignette uncredited cartoon illustrations (swipes?), softbound, a pamphlet in 8x5 inch stapled wraps. Find a preliminary address to the public by city manager Miller with, laid in, two more messages from him: a brief "With compliments" leaf and a substantial "Budget Message" (nearly 2,000 words). He leavens his statistics with anecdotes ("citizens in 1923 did not pay for -and did not get- the benefits of such 1948 MUSTS as police and fire radio communication, pension funds, child hygiene services" &c) and the great world ("It was the year of Freud and of jazz"). Staples are somewhat rusty, paper is toned with some light staining, a good-only copy. (Inventory #: 230351)
