New York: Samuel Campbell, 1794. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. Contemporary calf, rebacked, spine label; text generally browned due to paper stock, with only a few brown spots, otherwise a good copy. First American edition, published the prior year in London. According to the author, for both prevention and cure of disease it is necessary to maintain in sight both the nature of one's constitution and the immediate cause of any specific ailment. In order to familiarize readers with these principles, Wallis has embarked upon a detailed explanation of "constitution." This necessarily includes treatment of the foods and liquids we ingest, as well as how things like exercise affect bodily functions. He then proceeds to deal with nursing, with medicines, and with specific diseases. Nervous ailments as well as female diseases are included in his treatment. The book is quite advanced for the time. Wallis (1740-1802), physician and author, was from York where he lived and practiced medicine. He also wrote a number of plays, one of which resulted in his losing his medical practice and having to relocate to London, where he lectured on the theory and practice of physic. He also published other medical works, and edited both the third edition of Motherby's medical dictionary and the Works of Thomas Sydenham on acute and chronic diseases. (Inventory #: 17290)
