[36] includes "a short account" of the origin and the progress of the society, brief accounts of monies distributed, and number families and persons assisted. Bit toned, rear leaf more so. Mason was Provost of Columbia College in the early 1810s, and briefly President of Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The Society for the Relief of the Destitute Sick originated in 1785 on a voluntary basis and was incorporated by a Seal of Cause from Edinburgh Town Council in 1813. It existed to provide relief to those prevented from earning a living by illness and unable to make claims on other public charities or parish funds. Shaw and Shoemaker 8702 (Inventory #: 1930)
