Garden City NY: Doubleday & Company, Inc.. Near Fine in Very Good dj. 1970. First Edition. Hardcover. [good solid book with only minimal shelfwear, extremely light spotting to top of text block; jacket a little age-toned, curled a bit along top edge, with a handful of tiny nicks and tears]. (B&W photographs) Autobiography by the exotic Polish actress who began her career in her home country on the stage and in films, but rose to major stardom in Germany in the late 1910s, largely under the direction of Ernst Lubitsch. She and Lubitsch both emigrated to Hollywood in 1922 (she was the first major European star to do so), and she remained under contract to Paramount for her entire American career, which ended with her "retirement" in 1928. It's generally accepted that her rapid decline in popularity was exacerbated by her over-the-top behavior at the funeral of her had-been-lover Rudolph Valentino in 1926, although it's possible that it may have been foredoomed by the advent of talking pictures. Her short-lived retirement ended in 1929, and during the 1930s she bounced around, making one film each in England, France, and the U.S., before landing back in Germany, where she appeared in a half-dozen films for the then-Nazi-controlled UFA Studios, where she had first achieved stardom nearly twenty years earlier. She returned to America for good in 1941, and lived mostly out of the public eye except for a couple of minor film roles and occasional public appearances. (She was one of several actresses who famously turned down the role of Norma Desmond in Billy Wilder's SUNSET BLVD., which eventually went to Gloria Swanson.) . (Inventory #: 24387)
