(B&W photographic frontispiece) Translation of the original Russian play, about an abused and self-sacrificing circus clown, best remembered today as the basis for the 1924 MGM film starring John Gilbert, Norma Shearer and Lon Chaney, and notable as the first American effort of Swedish director Victor Seastrom (Sjostrom). What's notable about this particular book is that it bears the personal bookplate of veteran MGM writer/producer Carey Wilson, who was credited with adapting the play to the screen. .
