[FRENCH] [DOWRY] 19th century French Marriage/Dowry Contract
1822. Loose_leaf. Cream paper, ink writing. Very good. 12 pages. 11.75 x 8.25 with attached fragment 11.75 x 5.75. Watermark present, with blind Royal Stamp, 75c ink stamp, legal stamp dated 1810. This beautifully handwritten document is a French marriage contract dating 1822, detailing the agreement between Louis Marraud & Marie Guerry. First paragraph outlines the marriage agreement, authorized by "the grace of God and the King of France and Navarre" - given the royal stamps and the permission of the King, this was likely a marriage of courtiers. The agreement goes on in detail pertaining to the dowry. Items include: table, bed, utensils, linens, salt holder, pitcher, and chimney hook. The chimney hook or crémaillére is a traditional French wedding gift, as once the chimney hook is installed, and can be used for cooking, traditionally, anyone who helped with the building and furnishing of the home would be invited for a meal. Each item listed in the dowry includes the cost. Paper slightly browned at edges, some loss at central fold on final page. (Inventory #: 1741)
