The author discusses his views relating to Aeolian sand-ripples, sand dunes, quicksand, ocean waves and snow-flakes, snow-drifts, snow-dust, 'snow-mushrooms', and other similar observations. "The contribution of Vaughan Cornish . . . (1862-1948) was the first British scientist to study dunes in detail, . . . Cornish was an amateur British geographer who made remarkable contributions to the study of wave forms in nature (Goudie 1972). He appreciated that these were found in seas, deserts, snow, clouds and earthquake activity, and he tried to elucidate what common factors produced such an important and widespread morphological type. . . . His interest in waves seems to have started with the study of waves developed in sand, ranging in size from mere ripples to large desert sand ridges, although early on he saw that waves in sand were analogous to waves in snow." – Richard J.
