Second Edition of Vol. I and II only of Commodore Perry's Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan, compiled by Francis L. Hawks, with the suppressed "Public Bath at Simoda" plate which depicted men and women together in the nude (Vol. I, p. 408). This is the Senate Report, preceded by the House Report. Vol. I being the 'Narrative' and Vol. II the 'Natural History Reports' of the expedition. Lacking two plates of facsimile Japanese paintings in Vol. I, also the plate of the Temple of Hat-chi-man-ya-chu-ro; the plate of the First Landing at Goraham is bound in at p. 272 instead of 256. With 86 plates in Vol. I and 42 plates of 43 in Vol. II, many aquatint or hand colored. With three additional cartographic plates and two folding maps in Vol. I, and 16 large folding maps in Vol. II, with some paper reinforcements at the folds. Seven leaves of facsimile text, of the Japanese language version of the treaty signed during Perry's expedition. Modern rebinding with library style gray cloth, with gilt lettering on the spine.
