The Grange, officially referred to as The National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry, was founded in 1867 to assist farmers with their post-Civil War difficulties: insect infestations, expensive shipping fares, excessive postal costs, expensive farming machinery, high mortgage rates, costs for storing grain, and falling prices. It was one of the few organizations to open membership to women. ["Patrons of Husbandry", Ohio Central History website]. Several libraries and publications attribute authorship to Caroline [Carrie] Arabella Hall [1838-1918], one of the eight founders of the National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry.
