Hauy was a French mineralogist, and is often considered the father of modern crystallography. Under Napoleon, he taught mineralogy at the Museum national d'Histoire naturelle and founded the Musee de Mineralogie. The very year of this publication matched the author's election to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
