As a reporter on the New York World and other newspapers, he encountered "a procession of the legendary personalities of the twenties and pre-twenties: actors and actresses, politicians, singers, gamblers, gangsters, chorus girls, cops, newspapermen, etc." (He also discusses his many months in an asylum, under treatment for alcoholism.)
