First edition, with 4 hand colored plates of scenes from the orient. It also contains a good deal of hard information about contemporary life in China and Korea. The "Alceste" was carrying Lord Amherst, who was to be the British ambassador there, to China. On the return voyage the ship was wrecked on the Straits of Gaspar near Borneo, but after a few close calls everyone was saved. See Huntress 188C. Hill 1167 who says, "A long and vivid account is given of their experiences, of how they were attacked by Malay pirates, and of their final rescue."
