1900. Student Notebook from the Early Days of the Case Method [Manuscript]. [Legal Education]. [United States]. Class Notes on Torts. [N.p., c. 1900]. pp. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5-1/2"). Plain-paper notepad, two metal fasteners at head. Light soiling and some edgewear to a few leaves at beginning and end of notebook, first leaf detached. Content in legible hand to rectos and versos of most leaves. $250. * This anonymous notebook was compiled about 20 years after the introduction of the case method at Harvard Law School, a method that was adopted gradually by other law schools after 1890. It is a fine example of an early set of student notes from a course using the case method. Each entry is a summary of a case and a statement of its legal principles. A note at the head of the first page, "Reference Books," lists three well-known titles: Clerke and Lindsell, Law of Torts, 1st ed. 1889, 2nd ed. 1896, 3rd ed. 1904 (and later editions), Bishop, Commentaries on the Non-Contract Law, only ed. 1889, and "Biglow on," which could be Bigelow, Leading Cases on the Law of Torts, only ed. 1875, or Cases on Torts, only ed. 1895.
