1861 · New Hampton, New Hampshire
by [James E. Wilson]
New Hampton, New Hampshire, 1861. Autograph Album. Good. Leather Bound. Approx. 8" x 5". Red leather covered boards with blind stamped decorative borders and gilt illustrated title and front cover. Repaired. Part of the original spine, with gilt decorations, has been rebacked onto red mulberry paper. The hinges were repaired and the covers are very tightly bound with slight difficulty opening the book. Leather is rubbed along the board edges. Album consists of 73 leaves with at least 114 autographs and inscriptions mostly with people from Lowell High School in Massachusetts. The majority autographs are dated between 1861 and 1862, a few are dated early 1863, one inscription is dated 1866, and another from 1870's. One autograph page has a very small picture of a young lady who writes "Yours Truly Algebra Class of 1/61 L. H. S." Several name cards (some adults?) are pasted down on the pages. A loose note sheet of paper is laid inside the album. It reads: "Lynn June 12-96 (1896) I came across this book in Lynn and I thought it might prove interesting to some one in Lowell a place I have never visited. I was born in 1859a t New Hampton where young Wilson apparently attended the New Hampton Literary Institute. Please do not return the book. Herbert W. Hartshorne 112 Alley St. Lynn.
