Clark Travels in the Old South Vol. III No. 169:
"Gosse's dominant interest in natural history was evident during his youth in England and during the eleven years that he spent in Newfoundland and Canada before coming to Alabama in May, 1838. There in Dallas County, he conducted a school for the sons of several planters. He returned to England after eight months to continue zoological investigations, to write many books, and to win enough recognition to be elected a fellow of the Royal Society. His book "Letters From Alabama" was not published until 1859; however, this volume was based at least in part on a diary Gosse had kept while in Alabama..." Also, according to Clark the numerous drawings "are presumably by the author (Inventory #: 16288)
