by ARNOLD, Edwin (1832-1904)
1891. unbound. very good. An original poem for the Daily Telegraph penned in twenty minutes! Autograph manuscript signed "Edwin Arnold", 4to. 1 page, March 26th 1891, written while editor of the Daily Telegraph - he responds to a subordinates request for a poem to fill space in the newspaper, in full: "How will this do? A Master-printer of the Press, he spoke - By mouth of many thousand tongues: he swayed - The Pens which break the scepters. Good Lord! Make - Thy strong ones faithful, and they bold, afraid!" Postscript: "Daily Telegraph Office, March 26th 1891 (twenty minutes after receipt of your kind note.)" A great example of one of Arnold's spontaneous creative moments.
