"Peter Hathaway Capstick (19401996) was an American hunter and author. He was born in New Jersey and educated at the University of Virginia although he was not a graduate. Capstick walked away from a successful Wall Street career shortly before his thirtieth birthday to become a professional hunter. His hunting career began in Central and South America and culminated with hunts in Africa for which he is best known. Capstick spent much of his life in Africa, a land he called his "source of inspiration". A chain smoker and heavy drinker, he died at age 56 from complications following heart surgery."
This limited edition includes works published by the Buckingham Mint and Derrydale Press and was commissioned by Safari Club International. It has a complex numbering system, as it was issued in various bindings. There were 2500 to 5000 of the various insular books reproduced for SFI, of those, 500 were uniquely bound as a matched set (with "One of 500" stamped at rear board) with matching numbers. Thus each of these books bears the number 2423 while also being one of 500. Every volume was signed by Capstick.
Four of the books were originally published by Derrydale and are limited to 2500 copies. These include:
Death in the Lonely Land
Sands of Silence
The Last Ivory Hunter
The remaining six books were published by Buckingham Mint in an edition of 5000 copies. These include:
Peter Capstick's Africa
Death in the Dark Continent
Death in the Silent Places
Safari: The Last Adventure
Death in the Long Grass
A very handsome set of this rather uncommon set. (Inventory #: 9954)
