Who's Who in Show Business, Inc. The National Directory of Show People. Preview Edition
by Hecht, Ken, editor
New York: editor/publisher dba as Who's Who in Show Business, Inc, 195. Hardcover. 171p., coated alkaline stock with b&w vignette photoportraits of performers-for-hire, grouped in talent catagories. Bound in at the back are dozens of application blanks for the upcoming season. An enormous item, 13.5x10 inch textblock in a 14x10.5 inch black cloth casebinding. The good news: text and photos are very good, no markings and no excisions; the bad news, the casing is shot. Casing is terribly worn, and while it is nearly detached from text, the remaining attachment is puzzlingly both strong and wrong, text sticks out of the case by a half inch. We tried to fix it and could not. At the same time the case should be kept, as it allows one to handle the big floppy slick-paper textblock. Che sera, a reading / research copy. A mix of nobodies and notables. Table of Contents is quite lengthy with many many catagories: it starts, "Accordionists. Acrobatic Artists. Actors. Actresses. Animal Acts" and so forth. We saw two Asian Americans listed and shown in "Dance," and numerous African American singers shown under "Vocal Artists" subcatagory "Teams, Trios, Groups". Terminal leaf (p.171) invites one to "join the family of talented artists who will be listed in The 1950-51 Edition" (which explains the bound-in application forms): one is coached to use one's professional name, permanent address, contact info, type of act, 7 lines of publicity, photo &c.
