by (AUCTION CATALOGUE: DRESDEN)
3 p.l., 469 pp. 8vo, antique panelled calf. Dresden: C.S. Walther, 1777. Part III of four sales of the duplicates and triplicates released for sale by the Kōnigliche (later Sächsische) Landes-Bibliothek of Dresden, one of the greatest of all German libraries, rich in the classics and in books bearing on the history and literary history of Germany, Poland, and France. The library was founded in the 16th century. It is no wonder that an auction of the duplicates and triplicates was held. Amongst the donations made to the library in the previous decade were the private collections of Count Heinrich II von Bünau (42,139 volumes given in 1764) and of Count Heinrich von Brühl (62,000 volumes given in 1768). This catalogue contains 9815 lots. There were two earlier sales in the series, in 1775 and 1776, and a fourth in 1802. In my Catalogue 37 (1987), the first in my "catalogus catalogorum" series, I described a "married" set of the first three volumes (now Getty; it took me some years to make this marriage). I cannot recall seeing another set or individual catalogue of this series on the market in the intervening years. Nice copy. ❧ Loh, III, p. 155. Schwenke 372. (Inventory #: 6706)
