MY LIFE ON THE PLAINS. OR, PERSONAL EXPERIENCES WITH INDIANS
by Custer, George Armstrong
New York: Sheldon and Company, 1874. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo, 256 pages; G-; bound in publisher's brown cloth, gilt and black tooling; mild rubbing and wear to boards, corners bumped; front gutter shaken and loosening; multiple old newspaper clippings pasted to endpapers, also pasted to rear of one plate, some offsetting from clippings present; one endpaper loose, but present; with portrait frontispiece; shelved case 1. After the Civil War, Custer was appointed a lieutenant colonel in the Regular Army and was sent west to fight in the Indian Wars. On June 25, 1876, while leading the 7th Cavalry Regiment at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in Montana Territory against a coalition of Native American tribes, he was killed along with over one third of his command during an action later romanticized as "Custer's Last Stand". Before he died, he wrote a series of magazine articles of his experiences on the frontier, which were published in book form as My Life on the Plains in 1874. The work is still a valued primary source for information on US-Native relations. [wikipedia]. Shelved Dupont Bookstore.
