Half Morocco, Marbled Boards
Half Morocco, Marbled Boards. Very Good. N.d., circa 1880s. Oblong 8vo. 17.5 by 25 cm. The drawings are rendered generally with great precision. Some, perhaps, most, are probably copied from prints or other works. Actors portrayed include "Genial" John McCullough, a popular American tragedian, John Howard Payne, English actress Lilian Adelaide Neilson (in memorium), Edwin Booth (we believe), Edwin Forrest, Thomas Hamblin (as "Coriolanus") Included among the buildings are a home of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Cawdor Castle, Mark Twain's birthplace and the house where John Wilkes Booth died. Perhaps the most charming of the architectural drawings is a panorama of "Fergus Falls", with a mill and a rural setting. Also a pencil drawing entitled "New Year's Day in Old New York", showing a young Dutch couple, a sweet picture of toddlers learning to dance, and a funny sketch of a fierce cat screeching at a Chinese man. Condition: moderate shelfwear. Rubbing along joints and edges. Clean within.
