Wainwright, one of the British archaeologists working for the Fund. Prof. Thomas Whittemore, the American representative on the Committee of the Fund, was charged with the general oversight of this special work on behalf of the American subscribers, and he explains the circumstances of the excavation in a Preface to the scientific part of the work, which is written by Mr. Wainwright. Tombs were excavated at various dates from the predynastic period to the New Kingdom, and yielded a fair amount of archaeological material of the usual kind for the contributing American museums.
