by JANSSON, J.
Amsterdam: Jansson, J., 1650. unbound. Map. Hand colored engraving. Image measures 21" x 25." Mid-17th century, double page map of Egypt showing Cairo and the Nile river as it flows from the Mediterranean Sea. Oriented 90 degrees to the right, so that the Nile is horizontal, the notations for cities and population centers are more dense near Cairo and Jerusalem, and become more sparse the farther from the Mediterranean the Nile flows. Much of the Red Sea can be seen as well as part of Arabia. Wonderful depiction of the Pyramids is included in this well designed map. Jan Jansson was part of an influential family of map publishers from the Netherlands throughout the 17th century and beyond. They were based in Arnhem then in Amsterdam. They were printers, publishers and booksellers. Major publications were under the joint ownership of the Jansson heirs and their printing empire. This is a beautiful example of his work.
