Kipling began to write these stories during a stay in America for the amusement of his daughter, Josephine; sadly, she died at a young age of pneumonia. The stories remain popular, having been adapted numerous times, as well as being published as separate works.
On the front paste-down is the lovely, custom designed bookplate of Agnes Jekyll, possibly the Agnes Jekyll who lived 1861-1937, an artist and philanthropist who was made Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1918. The bookplate is signed but is difficult to read, it could be "C.B. Sherson 1890".
