Spaulding examines the ecology, trails, history and other details of the White Mountains, resulting in a text that is more than a simple travel guide. Interspersed throughout are interesting episodes in the history of the White Mountains, including accounts of the 'first ladies' to ever hike the mountains, the death of an English baronet on Mount Washington's slopes, and Native American legends.
