1838 · [Buffalo]
by Pierce, Maris B.
[Buffalo]: Steele's Press, 1838. 16pp. Dbd. Contemporary ink inscription on titlepage. Some foxing, dust- soiling, and toning. Overall very good. The first edition of this important Native American address. Pierce was a chief of the Seneca tribe, and was enrolled at Dartmouth College. He would become one of the first Native Americans to earn a college degree. In this address he seeks to reveal the poor treatment of the Senecas by the United States with respect to their lands in New York. The appendix prints the text of an agreement between John Snow, a Seneca chief, and Heman Potter, as an example of fraud resorted to by whites to obtain Indian lands. A second edition appeared in Philadelphia in 1839; this Buffalo printing is quite rare in the market. HOWES P356. SABIN 62737. FIELD 1216. SEVERANCE, BUFFALO IMPRINTS, p.16. AMERICAN IMPRINTS 52325.
