S. l. (Monroe, Wisconsin): The Monroe Daily Independent, 1890. First Edition. Very good. Leaflet, n. d. (ca 1890); 4 1/2 x 2 3/4; single sheet of beige card stock, text to recto only; a slight crease line to upper left corner and minor wear to edges; light, uniform age-toning; very good condition.A delightful, naughty, and even a bit vulgar poem, comprised of six 4-line stanzas, it advertised the Monroe Daily Independent - a small, regional newspaper in Wisconsin at the end of the 19th century. It read, in part: "Dogs delight to bark and bite, / And little birds to sing, / But all that flies can find to do / Is ;;:,::,:.:;::, on everything...The one that makes the largest spots / They deem for king is fit - / They crown him with a golden crown, / All garnished o'er with ;;:;:;;::;;;;:::;;:;;;;;:;:;:;" Below the poem came the clincher: "You will find no fly ::::: on the Monroe Daily Independent, although it costs you only 10 cents per week. Try it." (Inventory #: 002510)
