by Low, Harriett.
(Woodinville, WA) : (Nan P. Hodges), 2002. Two volumes. xii, 418, (1) - 833 pp. Color plates.
This is one of my favorite China Trade references. Harriet Low of Salem was taken to China by her uncle and aunt in 1832. She came of age there, fell in love, had the affair tragically quashed by her uncle, befriended the artist George Chinnery (who painted the portrait of her that graces the covers of this work), and returned to America after the uncle's death. In the mean time - between 1832 and 1834 - she met, and recorded her interactions with, just about EVERYBODY involved in the China Trade. A compelling read, as well. Fine condition in printed wrappers. (Inventory #: 41214)
