Large Octavo. xviii, 19-651 (5)pp. Original three-quarter light brown pebbled leather over marbled boards with gilt lettering and ruling, blind-stamped tooling on spine; raised bands. Marbled edges and endpapers. Two frontispiece engravings with tissue guard. With two hundred and thirty-four illustrations in text. Being some account of the steamship Quake City's Pleasure excursion to Europe and the Holy Land; with descriptions of countries, nations, incidents and adventures, as they appeared to the author. Twain's second book, his first nonfiction travel book, which was key to his reputation as a humorist observer of his mid-19th Century world. Bal 3316, 3rd issue. On page 654 there is and advert for History of the Bible. Binding with very light scuffing along edges, slightly more pronounced at joints, and boards. Boards slightly age-toned. Overall in very good condition.
