np, 1824. 11 lines, pen and ink on paper. 7-3/4 x 3 inches. Inlaid. 11 lines, pen and ink on paper. 7-3/4 x 3 inches. Scott's biographical sketches were first published as prefaces to Ballantynes Novelist's Library (1821-4, 10 vols.). Robert Bage's novels Mount Henneth (1781), Barham Downs (1784), and James Wallace (1792) were published in vol. IX, 1824.
Reading in part: "[Bage's] whole efforts are turned to the development of human character and it must be owned he possessed a ready key to it. The mere story of his novels seldom possesses much interest - it is the conduct of his personages as thinking and speaking beings in which the reader is interested and contrary to the general case the reader is seldom or never tempted to pass over the dialogue in order to continue the narrative" See Todd 148A (Inventory #: 316396)
