Reading: Smart and Cowslade, 1792. First edition. The Preface notes that this series of versified history lessons is adapted from the Chronological and Historical Game of England, published by Dudley Adams. Once a young scholar has absorbed the mnemonic verse describing the monarch and his rule, they must then perform eight "recapitulatory lessons" in which historical periods, royal houses, events, and dates are presented in circles and must be matched up. Two folding tables giving chronological divisions of English history are included in the back. Anna Maria Smart, the step-daughter of John Newberry and estranged wife of Christopher Smart, published this work, along with her elder sister's husband. Rare: this work is known in two institutional copies.
