El Pensador Mexicano was his radical journal. Fernandez was also known for writing El Periquillo Sarniento, which is reputed to be the first novel written in Latin America. Inspired by the Enlightenment ideals of Voltaire, Rousseau, and Diderot, Fernandez wrote against both the Mexican monarchy and the papacy.
