1895-1896 · Eliot, Maine
Eliot, Maine, 1895-1896. A collection of two menus which are meant to be humorous by playing accents of the locals. For example the menu dated from 1895 declares that the dinner is being held at the "Orthodox Meeting-House (Ye Worldly part thereof,) in Ye Gude Town of Eliot" while the menu from 1896 states "Ye Grate Publick Repafte, prepared by Ye Menne Folk" and "Wn ye Grandfather's Clocke doe indicate seven o'clocke, ye chowder shall begin toe descend." On the inside of each menu there is a wood cut, the first depicting a man and woman seated at a table with a roasted turkey in the center and the caption "Served Hot". The menus feature a variety of food items, such as Johnnie Cake and Marine Codfish a la Ireland. On the back of the menus are a list of waiters, and while some of the names might be legitimate- Efrom Whittaker Cooke for example- others definitely aren't. Some of the names listed are Jofia Makepiece Urche, Epaphroditus Cooke Krankfoot and Shimei Urche Cutfoote. Cutfoot also has "ye same as bee sweet on the girls" printed beside the name. Single fold menus. Measures 7 1/4" x 4 3/4" (folded), 9 1/2" x 7 1/4" (folded).
