New York: Wall Street Library Publishing Co, 1901. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Sixmo size, 129 pp, inscribed by Thomas D. Richardson. Filled with a humourous take on the Wall Street of over 100 years ago, this book includes chapters such as "Inside Information - Many Facts Not Generally Known" and "The Real Manipulator - Reasoning by Reducing a Position to an Absurdity". Inscribed by the author "To Col. A.R. Blakely with the regard of the author, Thomas D. Richardson". Colonel Blakely (1841-1908), from the little we could find online, was an Irish immigrant who (oddly) served in the Confederate Army. With nine caricature illustrations by Homer C. Davenport (1867-1912), a well-known illustrator in his day who worked mostly as a political cartoonist; he began his career with the "San Francisco Examiner" and eventually moved East. In addition to being a successful illustrator he also acquired and bred Arabian horses, bringing 27 of these magnificent animals to the United States where the breed was just becoming established. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full rust cloth, gilt lettering on the front and spine, author's inscription on the verso of the frontispiece, the frontis and eight other caricatures throughout by Homer Davenport; sixmo size (6 3/8" inches by 5"), pagination: [1-4] 5-129. ___CONDITION: Overall very good, the binding mostly clean with just a few spots of light soil, the corners straight with minimal rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and other than the author's inscription entirely free of prior owner markings; lacking the front free endpaper, some light sunning to the spine, light foxing on the first few pages, the frontis with a vertical crease near the guttter, and two leaves with small closed tears in the bottom margins (pp. 91/92 and 117/118); overall a solid, very good copy of a book relatively scarce in the marketplace with only one other copy online as of this writing, this the only copy signed by the author. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
