The Lamplighter [three issues, plus variants of two]
by Tropa, Eleuterio J.
San Francisco: E.J. Tropa, 1948. Amateur press publication, mimeographed, 7x8.5 inches, all of them four pages, folded from a single sheet. Issues present are Vol. 1 no. 1 (two versions, with substantially different layout and a number of textual differences); Vol. 1 no. 2 (again, two variant versions), and number 5. Varying amounts of toning, one with a short closed edge tear, generally very good. OCLC lists only one holding, whose place of publication is misattributed to Philadelphia. Much discussion of the world's post-war conflicts and the need to spread brotherhood and harmony. Tropa, a member of the United and National Amateur Press Associations, gives his contact address as the USS Thomas Jefferson, a ship based in San Francisco that was engaged in trans-Pacific traffic. Around the time of these publications he established the Lamplighter World Peace Mission in California, a New Age sect that came to incorporate belief in interplanetary travel (a compound of huts in Ilocos Norte in the Philippines was designed to launch into space in the year 2000). After his return to the Philippines he became known as a patron of animal sanctuaries, including the Cebu City Zoo. (Inventory #: 246423)
