"Lalla-Roukh is the culminating work of David's career. He was never to surpass it in the ten years that remained to him. It became his last orientale ... just as the Desert was the first. Although they diverge in important repects, each is essentially a set of miniatures, a narrative mode common to the aesthetic experience which David made his own ... Lalla-Roukh ... was clearly the great event of the season ... Between the years 1862 and 1884 performances at the Salle Favart alone totalled 279." Veinus Hagan: Felicien David, pp. 166, 168.
