"Dr. Parke, a surgeon, and eight other men organized the Como Pioneer Company of Como, Illinois, on April 1, 1849, and left for California on April 7. The company, traveling in three wagons, followed the California Trail and entered via Donner Pass on August 31. After a short visit to Sacramento, Parke arrived at Bidwell's Bar on the Feather River... his diary for September 20, 1849, to September 18, 1850, documents his life in the mines and principal cities and provides good descriptions of the Indians" (Kurutz).
